One in four MPs call for action to close the attainment gap

156 MPs, nearly a quarter of all MPs, have sent a powerful message to Government to take action to close the gap in attainment between deaf children and their hearing peers.

Two parliamentary petitions, known as early day motions, were tabled in the last parliamentary session, which ended on 27 November 2008, on the educational attainment of deaf children. Both early day motions highlighted that deafness is not a learning disability.

This follows the publication of the NDCS campaign report Must do better! in June 2008, which set out recommendations for urgent action.

NDCS is continuing to lobby key decision makers across the UK to help ensure that all deaf children are able to fulfill their potential - and this will remain a campaign priority for the next parliamentary session.
