Making disabled children matter in the general election

The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is one of forty organisations supporting the Every Disabled Child Matters constituency pledge, which has been signed by over 200 candidates to date.

The Every Disabled Child Matters campaign, which NDCS supports, is calling on all new and re-elected MPs to sign up to their constituency pledge – a series of five commitments that will benefit disabled children, young people and their families following the General Election.

These commitments are:

1. Meet with disabled children, young people and their families to discuss key issues of concern to them

2. Raise these issues of concern, and promote rights and resources, for disabled children, young people and families from my constituency in Parliament

3. Visit local services for disabled children and their families on a regular basis

4. Support measures to transform services for disabled children and their families, such as the Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) programme in England

5. Find out how funding is being used in my constituency to improve services for disabled children, young people and their families

There is also a version of the pledge for the UK devolved nations.

EDCM is encouraging supporters to email their local political candidates through their website and ask them to sign up to the constituency pledge. They have also produced a campaign toolkit with ideas and tips for other ways to encourage local political candidates to sign up.

Over the coming months, NDCS will also be preparing a special pledge for deaf children for political candidates to sign.
