Child protection

Lord Laming has published an independent report into child protection arrangements in England, following the tragic death of Baby P. The report includes no direct reference to deaf children, despite NDCS concerns in this area.

In a debate on the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Bill, MPs discussed NDCS's concerns over the adequacy of training for teachers to work with deaf children.

British Sign Language

9 March 2009

In response to a question about pilot schemes and special educational needs, the Government has referred to its work to raise the status of British Sign Language, which will aim to increase sign languge skills in the children's work force.

UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Following last month's announcement that the Government will sign up to the optional protocol, the Government has now confirmed it will begin steps to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Deaflympics

Malcolm Bruce MP, chair of the All Party Paliamentary Group on Deafness, has tabled a parliamentary petition (known as an early day motion) calling on the Government to support the Deaflympics.
