Emotional health and well-being

Evidence suggests that deaf children are more likely to experience emotional health problems. With the appropriate support, deaf children can grow up to be confident and resilient individuals. However, growing up deaf in a hearing world can pose challenges to the emotional well-being of many deaf children.

Unlike England and Northern Ireland, there are no specialist mental health facilities in Wales. NDCS Cymru is calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure that deaf children and young people have access to specialist mental health services, if and when they need them.

NDCS Cymru is also working to raise awareness of the need to promote positive emotional well-being for deaf children and young people.

Healthy Minds

Healthy Minds is a resource, developed by NDCS, which aims to explore good emotional health and wellbeing with young deaf people. It does this in a way that uses their personal experience and humour, communicating in ways that allows them to feel safe, and developing a can-do attitude.

NDCS will be providing training for those who would like to maximise their understanding of good emotional wellbeing for deaf children through using this resource. Contact caroline.doherty@ndcs.org.uk if you would like a pack or more information about the training.
