Welsh Assembly Government reviews the statementing system

The Welsh Assembly is currently reviewing the statementing system. NDCS Cymru wants to make sure that any changes work for deaf children and young people.

At the moment, many deaf children are given a Statement outlining the support they require in school. Many other deaf children are placed onto School Action/School Action Plus programmes to support them through their studies. NDCS Cymru accepts that the current system is not perfect, but wants to make sure that any changes to this system improve the support available to deaf children and young people in Wales.

NDCS Cymru has met with Welsh Assembly Government officials to discuss some of our concerns and to highlight the key issues that need to be considered to ensure that changes to the new system benefit deaf children and young people.

Pilot schemes start in September

In September 2009, a number of local authorities will trial some of the Welsh Assembly Government’s proposed changes. The local authorities set to undertake these pilots have now been revealed. Families living within these local authorities should be aware that the pilot schemes will not affect their rights and that they will still be entitled to the same support as families elsewhere in Wales.

The pilot schemes are due to end in 2012. The Welsh Assembly Government will then review how successful the pilot schemes were before making any changes to the current system.

NDCS Cymru will continue to meet with Welsh Assembly Officials to discuss the pilot schemes.
