Lisa Capper

Trustee

Lisa has two children, Rachael and Harrison. Harrison has a right side Microtia, is moderately deaf and wears a bone anchored hearing aid. Lisa works as an Assistant Director in adult skills for central government and has a background in the voluntary sector and parent partnership work.

From the point that Harrison was diagnosed as a baby, my family and I have benefited enormously from the information, advice and practical support that NDCS offers. I am thrilled to be able to use my skills and experience to help lead the work of NDCS. I am passionate about promoting equality for all children who have any degree of hearing loss so that they can reach their full potential.

Harrison was diagnosed with a moderate hearing loss at 6 months old. It was apparent when he was born that he had a hearing loss on the right side due to the right side Microtia (little ear). But it was a shock to learn he had a hearing loss on the left side as well.

Harrison was given a bone anchored hearing aid on a softband and this has meant he has been exposed to fairly good quality sound since he was 7 months old. He manages the hearing aid very well.

Lisa and her family have been supported by, and are providing support to, a number of organisations in the voluntary sector. Harrison has appeared on the front cover of a “Changing Faces” (the registered charity for face equality) booklet for health professionals on good practice on managing disfigurement.

Lisa is currently an assistant director in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, working on Skills for Life – the strategy for adult literacy and numeracy.   Previously, she had a career in the voluntary sector.

She was Director of Education and Lifelong learning work at CEDC (Community Education Development Centre, now Continyou), a national charitable trust where she developed national adult learning programmes including the parental involvement programme, “Share”.

Her previous role was director of a local charity and then Regional Manager at Kid’s Clubs Network (now 4Children) working on the development of the out of school childcare initiative and a national childcare strategy.

Lisa joined the NDCS Trustee Board in 2009.  She lives in Leicestershire.
