TOPIC: Going private for hearing aids.

We were told a few months ago that our 3 year old son has glue ear and he is considerably deaf at the moment. He has been referred to ENT consultant for next steps but we already know we don't want him to have grommets fitted because he is already having enough operations for other health issues. I was speaking to an audiologist who said that we will be going to the ENT appointment just to tell them we don't want him to have grommets and need a referral back to audiology for hearing aids. This seems a lengthy process amd a waste of everyones time! In the mean time our sons speeach isn't great so we were thinking of going private but we have no idea where to start looking or what sort of prices we will be looking at. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

REPLIES TO THIS MESSAGE

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear your son is in this position. For an idea of private prices take a look at CHEAR. This was a private audiologist we used for testing. She has a pricelist on her site.

However, you might be better off waiting for the NHS aids, as once you go private the hearing services are under no obligation to refit, do batteries, or provide a ToD.

As for the time line, you could get your SLT & GP to expedite the appointment. I did this for my son at your son's age. He could only say 5 words.

The very best of luck whatever you decide
