Family Weekend volunteers

As part of the All Together project, we are developing a team of volunteers to support our Family Weekends.

These weekends provide families with the opportunity to share experiences and information in a relaxed and stress-free environment. We're looking for volunteers to take on the roles of meeting families, facilitating discussion groups and presenting experiences.

Volunteers

We are currently looking for grandparents, fathers and siblings aged 18 years old and over to join our team in supporting our Family Weekends.

Volunteers interested in joining our team will have opportunities to develop key skills, find out more about NDCS, meet other volunteers and have fun. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to support our Family Weekends by volunteering in the following sessions:

  1. Diagnosis - sharing experiences
  2. Parent group work
  3. A deaf child in the family

For more information about the role that volunteers will play in each of the sessions, please download this document:

Training days

We are in the process of setting up training days for volunteers interested in our family weekend programme. Our next training day is:

  • Birmingham, Edgbaston Cricket Ground - 31 October 2009 (spaces still available)

In addition to this one-day training session, volunteers will also be supported in their roles during and after the Family Weekends and will be provided with a volunteer handbook at the training day.

What volunteers think!

  • "I like having the opportunity to share my experiences at the family weekends. I didn't have the chance to meet someone who had been through it all when I found out my son was deaf so I wanted to do this to support others."
    -  Father
  • "I've really enjoyed being involved in the sharing of experiences and facilitating groups at the family weekends. When one weekend is finished, I look forward to the next."
    -  Grandparent
  • "I was a little unsure at first but when I had completed the training, I felt more confident about what my role would be. Facilitating the mothers group at the family weekends has been a really good experience and also a personal learning curve."
    -  Mother
