The team have been developing the sessions offered on the Roadshow and now offer 6 different workshop options!

How many deaf young people will attend your visit?

The Emotional Health and Well Being/ Who Am I/ My Future sessions require 6-10 deaf young people within the age ranges specified. If you expect less than 6 deaf young people of suitable ages to attend then we will deliver a Technology workshop only for your deaf students (and Look, Smile, Chat sessions for hearing pupils).

Technology session (for primary & secondary schools)

Suitable for: deaf students - primary & secondary school pupils

Adapted for all ages 4+
Session time: 30 mins - 1 hour       

This session gives deaf children and young people the opportunity to try out technology such as vibrating alarm clocks, flashing doorbells and Bluetooth devices.  

Aim of the Technology session:

  • improve deaf children and young peoples’ independence by increasing their awareness of what technology is available to them
  • ensure they have an understanding of their T program and how it can help them to access sounds such as music, TV and using mobile phones
  • increase their awareness of how they can get this equipment

This session can be delivered alone or added to the  Who Am I/ EHWB/ My Future sessions below.

Emotional Health and Well Being (for primary & secondary schools)

Suitable for: deaf students - primary & secondary school pupils

Ages 8-10 years and 11-14 years
Session time: 1hour

NDCS’s Emotional Health and Well Being session uses some of the NDCS Healthy Minds resources and is designed to promote positive mental health and good emotional well-being for deaf children and young people. Through creative and fun activities the young people share their ideas about how to manage their emotions.

Aim of the Emotional Health and Well Being session:

  • help the students to know what is meant by good emotional and well-being
  • help the students to be aware of how to keep their bodies and minds healthy
  • identify their emotions and have strategies to manage them

 

Top

Who Am I? (for secondary schools)

Suitable for: deaf students - secondary school pupils only

Ages 12- 15 years
Session time: 1 hour
NDCS’ Who am I 1 hour session is designed to improve young deaf people’s self-esteem so they feel comfortable with their deafness and confident about being independent in a hearing world. Through fun and interactive group discussion, games and activities the deaf young people have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas. 

Aim of the Who Am I? session:

  • Get deaf young people thinking about their identity: achievements, interests and ambitions and how their deafness plays a part in who they are
  • Discuss what we have in common with others and the qualities that make us different

My Future (for secondary schools)

Suitable for: deaf students - secondary school & college students only

Ages 15-19 years
Session time: 90 mins

Drawing on NDCS’s Getting Ahead project this session aims to raise deaf young people's knowledge of their rights for support in education, training and employment and preparing them for the challenges ahead. The session is interactive with opportunities for the students to share their thoughts and ideas.

Aim of the My Future session:

  • help the deaf young people think about their futures and what they want to go onto next
  • help them develop the confidence and coping strategies to manage their deafness in different situations

Look, Smile, Chat (deaf awareness for hearing children: primary & secondary schools)

Suitable for: Hearing students- primary and secondary school pupils

Adapted for all ages 4+

Session time: 30 mins

This session uses the NDCS Look, Smile, Chat resources for the hearing classmates of deaf children to improve their deaf awareness and reduce the communication barrier between them. The session involves group discussion, myth busters, lip reading games and a video clip on communication.

Aim of the Look, Smile, Chat (for hearing students) session:

  • increase hearing childrens' understanding of the communication difficulties deaf people can face
  • enable hearing children to communicate easier with their deaf classmates

About Deafness (deaf awareness for hearing children: primary schools)

Suitable for: Hearing students - Primary school pupils

Ages: 4-7 years

Session time: 30 minutes 

This session gives the hearing classmates of deaf children the opportunity to learn about deafness, technology and communication.

  • Try on a dummy hearing aid and talk about what deafness means

  • Try out some technology that can help their deaf friends, such as vibrating alarm clocks and flashing doorbells

 Discuss different ways to communicate and make yourself understood and learn some basic signs

Aim of the About Deafness (for hearing students) session:

  • increase hearing childrens' understanding of the communication difficulties deaf people can face
  • enable hearing children to communicate easier with their deaf classmates
  • introduce hearing children to some of the technology that can help their deaf friends
