Getting Ahead project

NDCS’s Getting Ahead training programme is for deaf young people aged 13 to 19. It aims to make a positive contribution to reducing the barriers this group may face and preparing them for the challenges ahead.

The programme has been tailor-made to help them:

  • Think about themselves and their future
  • Build their self-esteem
  • Have the confidence, skills and coping strategies to interact with others
  • Challenge themselves to communicate more
  • Understand how to work as part of a team
  • Have an appreciation of their rights and responsibilities
  • Respect themselves and have confidence in their own ability to deal with transition and independence.

The programme is designed to fully equip deaf young people with the life skills they need in areas such as further education and employment. It also allows deaf young people to relax, get to know each other, have fun and take part in challenging activities. During the programme deaf young people are given a workbook which covers different exercises, a pathways section and an information and guidance section.

Our Getting Ahead training programmes take place at residential weekends throughout the UK. Check out the events webpage on the Buzz website for Getting Ahead residential weekends.

We offer Getting Ahead sessions to deaf schools and to hearing impaired units in schools and to deaf youth groups upon request. Teachers at schools or youth workers/leaders can contact us for further information including a training request form.
