Weekends for families of newly identified deaf children

Excellent weekend! The children have had a great time and we have made new friends and learned a great deal.

What is it?

NDCS runs free weekends for families of children who have been identified recently with a hearing loss.

Why?

It is a weekend where families with a newly identified deaf child can relax and share experiences.  The whole family can come!

What happens?

Parents take part in a weekend programme of group discussion led by NDCS staff and volunteers.  There are also specialist sessions led by professionals such as teachers, speech and language therapists and audiologists.

What about my child and / or their siblings?

The children, with their brothers and sisters, can meet and play in a crèche run by child minders with specific experience with deaf children.

Is there a cost involved?

No. All accommodation, meals, children’s activities and the information pack are free of charge.

What else?

We also run weekends for families of deaf children who also have additional needs. Please contact our Freephone Helpline for details.

How do I book?

Contact our Freephone Helpline (voice and text) on 0808 800 8880 or email helpline@ndcs.org.uk

We can give you the contact details of the Family Weekends Manager, who will be able to tell you where our nearest weekend is and when it is taking place.

They will also be able to give you further information and make the booking for you if you would like to do this.

PRAISE THE NDCS!!

6 July 2010

When my daughter was born, no one told us that she was deaf. After nine months, we had a visit from a Social Worker and after she carried out a routine check on my daughter's hearing, she insisted that I took her to the local clinic in Chelmsford where we used to live then, because she suspected that my daughter was deaf. My heart sank as the fear entered. Those days, 31 years ago, very few people really understood deafness and I felt very alone. Now browsing through the ndcs website, I think the parents of young deaf children and the deaf children are very fortunate, because I never had any advice, information, understanding or support to this extent as they do now. Financially or otherwise. THANK YOU
