Surfing safely

The internet is a very useful way of finding information, but if you are using chat rooms, you should know how to surf safely.

Your school, college or local library may have free access to the internet. Ask them if you can book some time to surf the web and do some research!

If you are not sure if the website you are surfing is safe, or if you feel uneasy about who you are chatting to online, talk to a member of your family, a teacher or support worker, or a friend.

Remember:

  • Don't give out personal details like your name, age or address.
  • Don't give out photos or information about your family, where you live, or where you go to school.
  • Don't always believe what other people say online.
  • Don't open an attachment or download a file unless you know and trust the person who has sent them.
  • Never arrange to meet someone you have only met on the internet without telling your parents, getting permission and taking a responsible adult with you. If you do meet someone it should always be in a public place.
