July - Rhythm and Rhyme
Many musicians are inspired by books. Take a look at the National Year of Reading website for some examples of songs that are based on books.
Did you know that Iron Maiden did a heavy metal version of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley? Or that Nirvana’s song Scentless Apprentice is based on the serial killer in the novel Perfume?
A great way of combining reading and rhythm is to do some karaoke. You could sing or sign along! Or you could perform some poetry. A poetry jam is a fun group activity.
If you don’t feel like performing yourself, you could always write your own poetry. Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen is judging the Children's Poetry Competition this year - click here to find out how to take part.
In addition, the School Library Association website has a great book list for this month's theme of Rhythm and Rhyme, including books for people of all ages.
