What if there isn’t a local group in my area?

Local groups are important because they offer families support near to their home. That's why NDCS is always keen to support parents and professionals who want to set up a new local group in an area that isn't already covered by the NDCS local group network.

Local groups are started by all kinds of people and for all kinds of reasons. Some are set up by a professional who works with families with deaf children and who want to put parents in touch with each other. Some begin with a single family who would like to meet other people in a similar position. Others start with a small group of parents who want their children to meet other deaf children.

If there isn't a local deaf children's society in your area, and you think that you might like to be involved in setting up a new local group, please get in touch with the Local Groups Team on 020 7014 1140 (voice) or email the membership team at localgroups@ndcs.org.uk

As well as giving general advice on how to set up a new local deaf children's society we can:

  • publicise the group to parents and professionals in the area;
  • help organise initial meetings;
  • provide a set-up grant to cover initial costs;
  • help the group set its aims and priorities; and
  • give advice on how to run a committee and fundraising.
