Wigan and Leigh Deaf Children's Society
Are you the parent or carer of a child who is deaf or has a hearing impairment? Do you live in or around Wigan and Leigh?
About our group
We are a group of parents and carers of deaf children in the Wigan and Leigh area. We cover the full Wigan borough. We organise regular activities for deaf children and their families. We are always delighted to hear from anyone who wants to get involved in the group.
Aims and activities
We aim to provide regular activities and events for deaf children so they grow up knowing other children who are just like them. Most deaf children in Wigan will go to mainstream school where they will often be the only deaf child.
We aim to provide a local source of ongoing support to deaf children and their families. Most deaf children are born into families with no experience of hearing loss. It is very daunting to be told your child is deaf and sharing experiences with others in the same situation as you is really helpful.
We aim to be a voice for deaf children in the Wigan and Leigh area. It is important that professionals understand the views of deaf children and their families and we want to get involved in shaping health, education and social services for deaf children in the Wigan and Leigh area.
