West of Scotland DCS
Are you the parent or carer of a child who is deaf or has a hearing impairment? Do you live in or around west Scotland?
About our group
Founded in 1947 by parents of deaf children, West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society has grown to an organisation of over 300 family members.
Managed by a committee of parents and professionals, the society has one full-time family support worker and two part-time family support workers as part of a family support project funded by the Big Lottery.
Aims and activities
The support workers (all parents of deaf children themselves) are happy to meet with families either in their own homes or at the office. They help families at times of diagnosis, when claiming benefits, when making educational or communication choices and more generally by providing someone to talk to about any concerns.
We provide a range of services to families and carers with deaf children throughout the West of Scotland covering the areas of North and South Lanark, City of Glasgow, East and West Dumbarton, North, South and East Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, Argyll and Bute.
The society provides information and advice on many aspects of childhood deafness including diagnosis, hearing aids, technology, education and benefits.
Throughout the year, we run a number of social events such as sports days, Christmas parties, information days and a monthly a coffee morning for pre-school children and their parents, carers and grandparents. We also produce a regular newsletter for members.
The society relies heavily on donations and fundraising and an Annual Draw takes place each year during Deaf Awareness Week.
