North Devon Deaf Children's Society

Are you the parent or carer of a child who is deaf or has a hearing impairment? Do you live in or around North Devon?

About our group

North Devon Deaf Children's Society provides a comprehensive range of club activities for deaf children and their siblings.

Aims and activities

We offer an after school club in information technology on a Tuesday, where the children are taught keyboard skills, graphic design, and how to access the internet.  We have a qualified teacher who is presently encouraging the children to design and produce their own newsletter.

We also have a music club on a Wednesday where children are introduced to a number of different instruments, with the help of the Wren Trust, who have pulled together a junk band called Plastic Fantastic. Children are taught to sign nursery rhymes, folk songs, carols, choruses and silly songs.

Funding is being sought to develop the percussion band and to add brass instruments at the appropriate time.

Also, we have a mums and tots drop-in on a Tuesday morning, with a view to develop a pre-school in the foreseeable future (depending on funding). This is a joint venture with Victoria House and Social Services, and we are planning that a teacher, speech therapist and a health visitor will join our mums on a regular basis.

On Thursday mornings, a coffee morning takes place for parents and friends who would like a taster of BSL, organised by a qualified teacher.

During the holidays, a full activity programme is designed by the children to include both educational trips and excursions and sporting activities. A fabulous trip to Disneyland Paris was organised in the spring half-term and this summer the children enjoyed horse riding, canoeing, rock-pooling, swimming, a trip to Butlins, cascades, and Flambards. This was all in addition to the kids' clubs where activities included arts and crafts, music and videos.

We hope to develop a course for our teenagers to include off-road mountain biking, abseiling and surfing with the Royal Marines at Chivenor, Barnstaple.

This year ends with a grand finale - a Christmas carol concert with a brass band, a signed performance of Cinderella and a Christmas party organised by the North Devon DCS committee members.
