BME Project
Supporting black and minority ethnic families of deaf children.
Research suggests that there is greater prevalence of deafness among certain BME communties, one study indicating the incidence of deafness to be 3.5 times greater for Asian children compaired to non-Asian children.
Deafness makes it harder for children to comunicate especially if English is not their first language.
Language differences often restrict parents from accessing vital information. This can prevent them from making informed choices about important issues such as health and education.
What does the project aim to do?
To empower families of deaf children from black and minority ethnic communities;
To establish close links with organisations within the BME communities and professionals working with deaf children;
To provide specific events and activities for the BME families with deaf children which will enable these families to establish contact with each other;
To ensure that Scottish BME families have access to comprehensive information, so that they can make informed choices and get support with issues associated with childhood deafness.
