My name is Paula Brown and I am the new Family Support Officer for South Wales. I have lived in Newport since 1987. I have two children, including a profoundly deaf daughter who is now 24 and married last year. As a family we have been involved with NDCS since we made the move from England to Wales in 1987, firstly as members of the local group, then I trained as a volunteer and eventually became the Welsh Development Officer and setting up the Wales office in Cardiff. My husband Laurence has also been a trustee recently.
In 1998 I felt the need for a change and took a job with Newport Sure Start as a Link worker. In 2000 I took a total change of direction and trained as a complementary therapist and ran my own business for 4 years but the need to be involved with children and families and deafness in some way was obviously still important to me and in April 2004 I took up the post of part time Newborn Hearing Screener in the Royal Gwent Hospital, whilst still continuing with my complementary business, alongside the screener role.
I am delighted that I am back working for NDCS as their Family Support Officer and look forward to meeting families, local group members and professionals (old and new!) in my area over the coming weeks and months.
Local groups
Local deaf children's societies are run by parents and carers of deaf children, working together with local health and education professionals. They give emotional and social support to families with deaf children, and give deaf children the chance to meet outside of school.
