Charitable trusts and foundations

Donations and grants from charitable trusts are a vital source of income for the NDCS. The support we have received from trusts over the years has helped us develop innovative new areas of work, and also provided funds to ensure we can continue to run our essential core services.

Technology

Support from trusts has helped NDCS change the lives of hundreds of deaf children through technology. The Listening Bus  has toured the UK, providing fun and informative workshops for children and adults alike, demonstrating telecommunications, alerting devices for the home, and other special equipment for deaf children to use.  Many trusts have also helped us purchase home computers and software for children from low income families, hugely improving their access to education and information, and supporting wider social development.  Family Support

The family is the most important influence on the lives of most deaf children. We work with families to enable them to give their deaf child the best possible support, and help them obtain better services that will meet their child’s needs. This year we are strengthening our regional presence  all around the UK, with additional home-based family officers who can provide one-to-one advice and emotional support. We are now running regular family events in every region, mostly supported by grants from local trusts, bringing families together to share their experiences and strengthen support networks in their area. Youth Support

Generous support from trusts, has enabled NDCS to offer 558 deaf children and young people the chance to partake in our youth programme of sports, arts and outdoor activities in the past year. Our football programme continues to be a great success, giving young deaf people the chance to play football in a safe, supportive and fun environment, increasing their self-esteem and social skills. NDCS has exciting plans to develop our youth services further. We are launching the largest ever consultation with 9-18 year olds, in order to ensure these services fully address the issues and barriers faced by deaf children and young people across the UK today.

Deaf Friendly Services 

To date, 2,557 schools have signed the NDCS Deaf Friendly Schools pledge, which puts NDCS in a unique position to identify and share good practice with schools and services willing to learn about how they can support deaf children effectively. With support from the True Colours Trust NDCS has created deaf friendly publications for schools to help teachers ensure the effective inclusion of deaf students. We hope to expand our Deaf Friendly Services by developing a range of resources specific to the needs of various institutions and teachers to help them ensure their deaf students are able to reach their full potential in life.
