How can I get involved?

There are 3 different challenges that you, your family, school or group of friends can take part in.

2012km Challenge

This challenge is great for teams and for anyone who wants to push themselves. There are three possible levels depending on how adventurous you are feeling: 2012 km, 201.2 km or 20.12 km

You, your family or your group must cover your chosen distance via one or more of the following sports (for families or groups this is an aggregated total):

  • Running (jogging, road-running, on a treadmill or on a track)
  • Walking (on a treadmill, on a track, rambling or hillwalking)
  • Cycling (in a gym, on a track, on the roads or off-road)
  • Swimming (in a pool or in open water)
  • Canoeing/Kayaking (inland or offshore)
  • Horse-riding
  • Rowing (on a rowing machine or on water)
  • Sailing (inland or offshore)
  • Windsurfing (inland or offshore)
  • Wheelchair (track, road or in a gym)
Use our Totalizer to keep track of how far you’ve gone and see if you can go the distance before the start of the Olympic Games in July 2012.

Team members don't need to take part in activities together, and, remember, every team member's efforts count towards the overall distance covered by the team. When you have completed your chosen distance, update your My Page and claim your reward.

Challenge suggestion: 2012 km Gold Challenge in a Weekend.
Perhaps your family or group could challenge itself to cover 20.12 km or 201.2 km over the course of a weekend? For example, a family of four cycling at 6miles per hour (10 km per hour) would need to ride for just over 5 hours over the weekend to complete 201.2 km. A group of 15 people jogging at 4 miles per hour (6.6 km per hour) would need to jog for just over 2 hours together to complete 201.2km.

Challenge suggestion: 2012km Gold Challenge over a Year.
A group of 30 would need to cover just over 50km per week over a school year to complete 2012km. That works out at 1.7km (just over one mile) each per week of swimming and cycling and running etc.

Olympic Sport Challenge

Learn Olympic or Paralympic sports by taking on a 5, 10, 20 or 30 sport challenge.  Choose your sports from our list of 30 Olympic and Paralympic Sports then use the Sports Finder on the Gold Challenge website to find the local club, coach or event where you can do your chosen sport.

Contact the club, coach or event (or ask us to do it for you) and arrange to do your sport.

Sports are completed by:

a) doing at least three hours of coaching in that sport; or
b) taking part in a competitive event.

The Olympic & Paralympic sport challenge allows you to create exactly the type of challenge you want.  Five of you could take on the 5 sport challenge doing one sport each or by doing all five sports together.

If you wanted a larger challenge a small team could take on 20 or even 30 sports and if you are looking for the Ultimate Challenge and want to raise a significant amount of money for your charity, why not take on all 30 sports in a small group or as an individual.

As you complete each sport, you can download a certificate and get it signed by your coach.  You can upgrade at any time from one challenge to another, simply let us know.

There are two parts to this challenge:

Part One:

Learn or improve your skills in one Olympic or Paralympic sport by doing at least three hours of coaching in that sport. Choose a sport from our list of 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports then use the Sports Finder on the Gold challenge to find your local club, coach or event where you can do your chosen sport. Contact the club, coach or event (or ask us to do it for you) and arrange to do your sport. When you have completed your sport, update your family My Page and claim your reward.

Part Two:

Complete any two of the following sport challenges as a family or group:

  • Swim 500 metres
  • Run 1500 metres
  • Walk 5000 metres
  • Cycle 10000 metres

Part Two of the Family Activity Challenge can be done anywhere you choose but you must complete it all together as a family or group. You can complete the distances over more than one day and you can download a Family Activity Tracker to help you measure your progress. Update your family My Page when you have completed each sport and you can then claim your reward.

Challenge Suggestion: Family Activity Challenge on Holiday.

If your family summer holiday venue offers sports coaching, why not try to complete your Family Gold Challenge whilst you are there? Book onto a beginner's course to complete Part One and then use the centre's swimming pool to record your 500m swim, and go for a family walk on another day to record your 5000 metres (about 3 miles) walk.
