Coin Art

This is a super-easy fundraising idea that children love to do. It’s also great for practising money skills with younger children.

Coin Art involves drawing a simple design on the hall floor using chalk and filling it with coins. If you are unable to draw on the hall floor then use huge pieces of card or large letters cut out from a roll of newspaper you can then place the coins on these. We suggest you draw a giant NDCS logo or the NDCS Listening Bus.

If you do draw on the floor, don’t forget to wash it off afterwards!

If the weather or space allows, it would be a good idea to do this in the playground where parents can see it when they collect their children as this usually attracts more donations.

You will need:

  •      chalk
  •      lots and lots of coins (make sure they are all British)
  •      a camera to take photos of your giant collection.

Preparation
To make this fundraising activity a success, the children will need to start collecting coins a few weeks in advance. When you tell them about the activity, draw the design so they can see just how many coins will be needed.

To keep the children motivated, ask them to bring in their coins each week so you can see how many they have collected (this will also help you to remind those who have forgotten). They can collect coins from their family and friends and use their pocket money. Remind them that they should not ask any strangers for money.

You could also ask the children to guess how many coins they think it will take to fill in the letters and offer a prize to the child with the closest guess or even for the class that brings in the most coins each week.

On the day
Draw the design on the floor and assign each group of children an area. Put the coins in bags or tubs and get to work putting them all in place. Once you have finished make sure you take photos and then why not send them to us? We would love to see them and to feature them in our Star Schools section.

Lastly, you will need to count the coins up, get them banked and let us know what you have done!

Tip!
Invite the local press so you can tell your local community what you are up to.

Our Publicity guidelines (19 kb) [pdf] will help you to do this.
