Silence speaks volumes

Not being able to hear what other children are saying and not communicating verbally can often make deaf sign language users feel isolated and left out when with hearing friends at school.

Try and understand how much harder it can be to understand and communicate with others by holding a sponsored silence. This activity is most effective when the children have learnt some simple signs, finger spelling and have practised lip-speaking and lip-reading. You can use any other forms of non-verbal communication you like such as mime, gesture, writing or drawing but no talking allowed!

Fundraising tip: Children (and staff) can be sponsored by the length of time that they are silent. This might be by the minute or even by the hour.

Remember, children should not approach strangers to ask for sponsorship.
