NDCS Finger Spellathon – October 2008

We are challenging schools across the country to take part in the very first NDCS Finger Spellathon this October.

This year, with your help, we aim to raise £40,000 for our vital work with deaf children and their families.

Fingerspelling can help all children to improve their spelling and enables non-signing children to learn a bit about British Sign Language (BSL).  Each child can be sponsored per word they learn or just for their overall effort – either way it’s just a really fun activity that children will love to do and a great way to raise funds for NDCS!

It’s easy to take part and there are some great prizes on offer including entry into a free draw for all schools who take part.

We’ll provide you with a Finger Spellathon CD Rom which includes:

  • guidance on how to set up your Finger Spellathon,
  • spelling lists – words linked to deafness,
  • a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the event to pupils,
  • a letter you can adapt, copy and send out to parents,
  • fundraising tips,
  • information about deafness for pupils,
  • an NDCS fact sheet,
  • case studies,
  • a sample press release,
  • certificates.

Register for your free CD ROM now and we’ll send it to you in September.

If you would like any support or advice in setting up your Finger Spellathon, contact NDCS Schools Officer Alison Burrell by email at alison.burrell@ndcs.org.uk or on 01273 696 686. Where possible, we can also arrange for someone from NDCS to come and talk to your school about the work that we do.

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you from NDCS.
