What our volunteers do

If you are interested in volunteering for the NDCS, here's the information you need.

Before signing up, please have a look at our current volunteering opportunities.

Events Volunteers

We run one day, weekend and week-long events for deaf children and young people all over the UK. These include  various sports, arts and outdoor activities.  We also run family events which can be one day or whole weekend events. We need volunteers to help supervise with the children and young people and make sure that they're having a good time.

Local deaf children's societies (DCSs) operate all over the country. You can contact those in your area directly to see what opportunities are available. Visit our local deaf children's society pages for more information.

Scotland: BME Family Support volunteers

In Scotland we have a network of volunteers called the BME Family Support Volunteers. These volunteers are all parents of deaf children and have been trained by NDCS.

They speak different community languages and support NDCS, Scotland Family Officers and Statutory staff (Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, Audiology staff and Social Workers) at home visits/hospital appointments/school review meetings  by providing communication support, and emotional support to families of deaf children.

They also help at events like coffee mornings, Saturday clubs for children.

Volunteering without Level 1 BSL

5 February 2010

Thank you for your post Suzie. Unfortunately, as our volunteers work directly with deaf children & young people, many of whom use BSL to communicate, we do require all hearing volunteers to have completed their level 1 BSL so that everyone has access to communication. However, it may be worth you contacting your local deaf children's society as they may be looking for volunteers (you can find details of these groups on our website). If you decide to complete a level 1 course please do contact us again as we may be able to offer you volunteering opportunities then. Many thanks for your interest in NDCS. Volunteering without BSL Level 1

20 December 2009

I currently have no sign language experience or any caring experience. Is there still an opportunity for me to help these children. I would very much like to help and make a difference in a child's life. Thanks Suzie
