Communication
Every journey starts with a first step
Thank you, you're doing something amazing. By supporting NDCS every month you are helping a deaf child take their first steps towards a brighter future.
Developing good communication is vital to all children and their families. With good communication skills a child can influence and learn from others. Deaf children are no different but sometimes the methods used to communicate are different.
There are many different types of communication used by deaf children including BSL, fingerspelling, lipreading and oral.
Deaf children often find it difficult to access communication, however with your support NDCS can help families learn how to communicate effectively with their deaf child enabling them to develop emotional, personal and social skills.
Your gifts at this time are important to help families learn to communicate effectively with their deaf child.
NDCS enables deafness not to be seen as a barrier and provides information on the following:
- Communicating with your deaf child - A look at some of the different communication methods used by deaf people with some basic tips to remember when communicating with deaf people.
- Deaf children with additional needs - Alternative methods of communication that may be appropriate for deaf children who have additional needs.
- Sign language - A practical guide on how to learn sign language and British Sign Language.
- Speech and language therapy - Speech and language therapy is one way of helping deaf children to develop their language and communication skills.
Your gift this month could help parents make an informed decision on the communication options available to them and their child.
