Director Brian Gale awarded an OBE
Brian Gale, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the National Deaf Children’s Society has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list for services to children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
This is a great accolade for Brian personally but also a significant tribute to the campaigning work he has carried out, including, for example, the new funding formula for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
There was a risk that the government’s fair funding policies would see a change in the SEN grant resulting in cuts to services for deaf children in some Local Authorities. But thanks to Brian’s influencing work as a member of various Department for Education advisory groups and the work of the Campaigns team, NDCS was successful in lobbying for a higher increase in government funding for SEN, (2.2% was announced) and a levelling of funding for Local Authorities currently underfunded, rather than a redistribution. This means that it will be harder for local authorities to justify cuts to vital services for deaf children.
Whilst Local Authority finances and services will of course continue to be under pressure, it’s an excellent start to the New Year!
