NDCS election pledge a big success

11 May 2010

Thanks to the hundreds of NDCS supporters who contacted their local politicians, over a third of MPs elected on May 6th have signed the NDCS election pledge for deaf children

Election 2010 vote for me

223 MPs from across the UK have committed to take action to:

  1. Close the gap in educational attainment between deaf children and other children
  2. Improve public services so deaf children and their families get the support they need from the start
  3. Help deaf children in their constituency get the same opportunities as other children.

Some of the MPs who have signed the pledge include:

  • Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrat party
  • Education spokespersons for the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties: Ed Balls, Michael Gove and David Laws
  • At least two MPs who are hard of hearing: Stephen Lloyd (Eastborne) and Yasmin Qureshi (Bolton South East)
  • Caroline Lucas, the leader of the Green party and first Green MP

MPs from a wide range of parties supported the pledge:

  • Labour: 96 MPs (out of 258 elected)
  • Conservative: 81 MPs (out of 306 elected)
  • Liberal Democrat: 38 MPs (out of 57 elected)
  • Democratic Unionist Party (Northern Ireland): 3 MPs (out of 8 elected)
  • Scottish National Party: 2 MPs (out of 6 elected)
  • Social Democratic and Labour Party MPs (Northern Ireland): 1 MP (out of 3 elected)
  • Alliance (Northern Ireland): 1 MP (out of 1 elected)
  • Green: 1 MP (out of 1 elected)

Nearly 1,000 NDCS supporters contacted their local candidates in their area, asking them to sign the NDCS election pledge for deaf children, sending out 2869 emails between them. A total of 965 local candidates signed the pledge.

NDCS would like to thank all those who took part in the campaign and helped ensure that the next Parliament will have many MPs committed to supporting deaf children. NDCS will now be working with with MPs from across the UK to make sure they make deaf children matter in the coming years.
