NDCS issues statement on closure of Ovingdean Hall School

11 March 2010

NDCS has issued a statement in response to news that Ovingdean Hall School, a non-maintained special school for deaf young people in the South East of England will be forced to close.

Brian Gale, NDCS Director of Policy and Campaigns, said:

“NDCS very much regrets the closure of the Ovingdean Hall School. It is very sad news for students, their parents, staff and all those connected with the school. It will disrupt the learning of all students, and for a significant number this closure will come at a critical time in their education.

NDCS will provide as much support as possible to the young people, their parents and school staff to find suitable alternative schools.

All involved should work together to ensure a smooth transition for the students to minimise the  impact of this closure on their education.

NDCS believes that there should be a  range of different types of provision to meet the diversity of needs and preferences of deaf children. It is therefore concerned that the closure of Ovingdean School narrows the range of provision available."
