Unique performance launches Arctic cycle for deaf children
Two Glasgow-based musicians are inviting local residents to a free music performance involving 111 cyclists, taking place in Glasgow on 29 May to launch an inspiring cycle to the Arctic Circle in aid of deaf children.
Arctic Cycle 2010
Alex South, 38, and Oliver Rundell, 32, will be setting off on 10 June for the Arctic, covering 1,500 miles in five weeks. They aim to raise over £5,000 towards a feature film about James Duthie, a profoundly deaf Scotsman, who cycled alone to the Arctic Circle in 1951, and for NDCS.
Alex South said: “I encourage everyone to come along to the performance on 29 May to support these important causes.
“James Duthie is a true inspiration, and a remarkable character to remember. By setting out on a lone journey to the Arctic Circle, he challenged stereotypes which surrounded deafness back in the 1950s and which the National Deaf Children’s Society continue to fight for today,” added Alex.
Jan Savage, NDCS Scotland Director, said:
“James Duthie was a great role model for young deaf people, and the feature film is an opportunity to tell a story from a deaf person’s perspective, which is extremely rare in the cinema."
Cyclists, who wish to take part in the event, please email arcticcycle2010@ollyandalex.com.
The live performance will take place on Glasgow Green, G40, on 29 May at 3pm. Communication support will be provided at the event.
