Deaf waiters wanted!

We are looking for dynamic Deaf people to take part in an exciting project this summer.

What for?
We are looking for 3-4 UK based deaf individuals to work as waiters in a special café where visitors will order using sign language and physical gestures only. 

In July this year the Nalaga’at theatre company from Jaffa, Israel will perform at artsdepot in North London for two weeks. As part of LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) they will stage their extraordinary show ‘Not by Bread Alone’ performed by their deafblind acting company. Alongside the show the highly successful Nalaga’at Café Kapish, staffed by deaf waiters, will be recreated at artsdepot.

If chosen for this project, you will work alongside experienced waiters from the Nalaga’at Centre as well as members of artsdepot café staff, to provide excellent service to those who visit the café this summer.

Where?
This job will involve training at the Nalaga’at Centre in Jaffa, Israel, (about 10 days, second half of June 2010)
All accommodation, flights and daily expenses for Israel will be covered on top of the fee.
Then working at the artsdepot café in North Finchley (first half of July 2010). You will need your own accommodation in London as this will not be provided.

When?
Dates: exact start date to be confirmed by mid-April but likely to be Monday 21st June for 4 weeks.
There will be a one-day induction at artsdepot and then you will fly to Israel for around ten days of training!

Fee:
You will be paid £1000 for the 4 weeks.

Who we want:

  • Must be over 18 years
  • Fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) and be prepared to deal with the general public
  • Adventurous outlook and prepared to face challenges
  • The confidence to communicate with members of the public (deaf and hearing)
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic about learning new skills 
  • Passionate about connecting with a wide range of people 
  • Experience of working in a café is not essential 
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends as part of a shift rota at artsdepot 
  • You are responsible for making sure you have an up-to-date valid passport
