SMS access to 999 - pilot requires more registrations

For the first time ever the national emergency services can be contacted via texting through a new National Emergency Text Service.

The national pilot started in September 2009 and has had over 3,000 registrations, but it still requires more in order to guarantee its future.

People need to register for the service first in advance of any real emergency.

There are two ways to register:

- Through the website at www.emergencysms.org.uk, where there are BSL information clips, or

- From your mobile handset by sending the word REGISTER to 999. You will receive a couple of messages back explaining terms and conditions. Simply text ACCEPT to 999 to be registered. The phone is registered, not you, so if you change your phone you will need to register again.
