Study to look into mathematics performace of deaf and hearing students

Whilsts there has already been research into why some deaf children have issues with reading, there has not been enough research into problems that deaf children may have with mathematics.

This study  follows from recent findings concerning the development of mathematical abilities in hearing children and empirical research and achievement data indicating that deaf students lag behind hearing age-mates in mathematical proficiencies.

Dr. Rebecca Bull of the University of Aberdeen will lead research at the Scottish end of the study while Dr. Marc Marschark, Honorary Professor at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen and Director of the Centre for Education Research Partnerships at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf will head up the US side. Funding from the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development in America is allowing this study to take place. You can read more about this here.
