Introducing the new Deaf Education Map search and take action features

Published Date: 15 Feb 2022

In this week’s blog we look at the search and take action features you can expect to see on the map.

During online focus groups with parents, you told us that flexible search is really important, so you can quickly find out how your local area is performing. You also want to use the tool to strike up conversations with local services and take other actions.

We’ve tried to include both these features in the new map and we’d like to give you a quick walkthrough of how it works.

More flexible search

When you land on the map for the first time, you’ll be greeted by a landing page with three different search options:

Search by your postcode or town - manually type in your area of interest

Use my location - look up your area automatically using your computer’s IP address

Click on the map - zoom and pan to the areas you are interested in

To make it easier to look up other areas, the map’s local area view contains a prominent search box. You can also hover over neighbouring areas on this map view to see the names of those areas and, with a single click, bring up the new area details.

Taking action

In our older maps, we have basic call to action buttons which are buried away underneath the text. In our new map, we wanted to make it clearer and easier for you to take action.

So, once you navigate to your local area, you’ll see a prominent ‘Take Action’ button towards the bottom-left of the page.

Clicking on this launches a menu of options:

Contact the National Deaf Children’s Society - clicking this opens up an email to us. You can let us know what you think of the map, ask for advice on what to do next or contact us about anything else related to the map. We’ll forward your email onto the best team to respond to your query.

Contact your service - clicking on this opens up a form and template email so you can speak to the service about the information on the map or ask them questions.

Contact your local politician - finally if you’d like to let your local politician(s) know about the map or ask them to do something about the information you’ve found, you can send them an email.

You told us you wanted to use the tool to start a dialogue about local services. We hope these options will do just that!

Stay tuned for our next blog post about the Deaf Education Map, where we will be announcing the full public launch and talking through some remaining features of the tool.
