New research challenge funds

Published Date: 18 Nov 2021

We’ve set up two new research challenge funds and are now inviting proposals for both.

Early years challenge fund

We welcome any proposals or ideas that might help us achieve our goal of making sure that deaf children receive the best support from the start in the early years.

We are especially interested in proposals that:

  • focus on effective support for deaf children age 0 to 2 and their families, and steps that can be taken to support families and promote a positive and rich home learning environment
  • have practical application (for example, to test an intervention that can be taken forward by NDCS and/or by existing services and settings or to evidence an area of existing good practice)
  • are coproduced with families.

Impact of Teachers of the Deaf

Families consistently tell us of the difference that peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf make to deaf children. At the same time, our review has found that there is relatively little published evidence on the impact of Teachers of the Deaf in supporting deaf children to achieve good outcomes. This can make it harder for us to make the case to UK Governments on the need to invest in Teachers of the Deaf. We therefore believe there is a need to strengthen the evidence base in this area so that we can more easily and clearly evidence the difference that Teachers of the Deaf make.

We welcome any proposals or ideas that might help us achieve our goal of developing the evidence base on the impact of Teachers of the Deaf. For this fund, we are keen to focus on the evidence base around peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf and how they support deaf children to achieve good outcomes.

We recognise that this is not a straightforward area to research. It is because it is challenging that we are keen to explore with others if there are innovative or creative ways in which the impact of peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf can be evidenced.

Invitation to submit your ideas and proposals

More information about the research fund can be found in the below invitations.

We are open to proposals from anyone, including professionals and services. We also welcome collaborative approaches. You are welcome to apply to both or either challenge fund.

The deadline for proposals is Monday 10th January 2022.
