Deaf Child Worldwide has supported the launch (14 October 2019) of an information booklet for deaf people with Mission Deaf Inclusion (MD), Odisha, a consortium of four non-government organisations of Odisha working for the wellbeing and empowerment of deaf children and young persons in rural communities.

The information presented in the booklet contains pictures and sign language actions that help deaf people to understand different services and resources that are available, different legislation and government orders as well as entitlements for people with disabilities including deaf people. The booklet will also prove to be a useful tool to enhance the quality of communication between deaf and non-deaf people in families and communities.

Deafness is often considered an invisible disability with very little understanding from mainstream society. The booklets will help change perceptions of deafness as well as emphasising the need for more highly skilled sign language interpreters in the state.

Joanna Clark, Director of Deaf Child Worldwide and Shampa Nath, Head of South Asia attended the launch event. Joanna Clark commented: “Deaf people face difficulties due to numerous barriers such as late identification, isolation due to lack of communication, lack of knowledge and skills including good education. By closely working with government departments, the judiciary, the media, NGOs and the parents of deaf children, we are addressing these challenges over time to make sustainable change.”
