Our work in East Africa

What we do

There are 8.9 million deaf children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We are working with partner organisations  to transform the lives of deaf children living in some of the most disadvantaged communities in rural and urban settings in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

We work with our partners to

  • Increase opportunities for deaf young people to access further training, education and employment by building their confidence and developing their skills, knowledge and experience.  We also work with vocational training colleges and employers to change perceptions of deafness and secure work placements for deaf young people.
  • Help deaf children and their families access support and services to build communication and language skills including training to support sign language
  • Work to get sign language recognised as a language in its own right and advocate for better training and more qualified trained sign language interpreters in-country.
