Fighting for better careers support for deaf young people
Good quality careers support can help deaf young people to make important decisions about their futures and access to opportunities to gain experience of work.
However, too many deaf young people are receiving poor information about the support available to them in employment and their rights under the Equality Act. Lower numbers are accessing work experience compared with hearing young people.
We believe these are two reasons why unemployment amongst deaf people is double that of hearing people.
With members of our Young People’s Advisory Board, we are raising this issue with MPs at party conferences this autumn. We want:
- Stronger duties on schools and colleges to provide tailored careers support for disabled young people
- An improved Access to Work scheme that enables deaf young people to gain work experience
