BSL Act Updates and Resources

Parents Guide

The purpose of this guide is to support both the families raising a deaf child and the professionals in Scotland working alongside them. Parents of deaf children in Scotland who have chosen British Sign Language (BSL) as the language and communication option for their child can find some key tips and resources, what support should be available in Scotland, and how the National Deaf Children’s Society can help. We have created videos about six of the families we work with. Here they discuss their experiences of raising a deaf child, and offer tips and support to families on their own journey.

Deafness fact sheet for professionals

The professionals guide is aimed at any healthcare or educational professional working with deaf children, young people and their families. The guides set out the services and resources provided by NDCS, which professionals can access online, and video case studies which can be used at appointments and shared with families you work with. There is also reference to the type of support that is available from different public bodies in Scotland. Some key principles developed through feedback from deaf children and their families are also set out to ensure consistency in the messages and communication they receive.
