Can you walk 50k for deaf children this May?
The 50k in May challenge is your opportunity to get active, improve your fitness and do something incredible for deaf children!
Walk (jog, run, or wheel!) a total of 50k throughout the month of May and get fundraising for deaf children.
The pandemic has turned everyone’s lives upside down. But deaf children are facing challenges that most people won’t have thought of.
Like how to communicate with someone who’s wearing a face mask – when you need to lip-read to understand, even if you use sign language. Or how to cope if you’ve fallen behind at school because online lessons weren’t accessible.
Right now, we’re working with deaf children and their families across the UK, but we need your help to make sure no deaf child gets left behind.
Whether you jog, walk or run to reach your 50k target, every step you take will bring us closer to a world without barriers for deaf children.
Where do I start?
It’s really easy! Just join our Facebook Group and register for your free t-shirt and fundraising pack, that we'll send to you by post.
All the while, our friendly community will be there to support and encourage you on your way.
After you've joined our Facebook Group and registered for your fundraising pack, setting up a fundraising page on Facebook is the easiest way to raise money. You can set one up in a few seconds. Don’t forget to set your end date for 10 June!
You can share your page quickly and easily with your Facebook friends, and it’s also quick and easy for them to donate. There’s no minimum target so every pound raised will make a difference.
Not on Facebook? No problem! You can set up a JustGiving page to collect your funds. Just drop us a line on [email protected] to tell us your name, address and what size t-shirt you would like (S, M, L or XL) and we’ll post you out your pack and t-shirt.
Setting up your fundraising page on Facebook is definitely the simplest way to raise money. You don’t have to collect the cash and send it on to us after your challenge! Online fundraising pages tend to raise more than offline sponsorship forms as well.
Alternatively, you can set your own page up on JustGiving. Make sure you drop us a line on [email protected] to tell us your name, address and what size t-shirt you would like (S, M, L or XL) and we’ll post you out your pack and t-shirt.
You’re also welcome to use a sponsorship form to collect sponsorship offline. Please see our Ways to Pay information for details on how to send your offline funds over to us. If you are sending a cheque in the post, please include a short note to explain you have taken part in the 50k in May challenge.
If you choose to send funds via bank transfer or making a payment through our website, please include the reference 50KIM so we can track this.
This is a self-reported challenge but we’ll send you a tracker in your fundraising pack to help you keep a note of how far you’ve gone in the month.
When you’re walking you can track your distance using whatever method you prefer. We love apps like Strava or tech like Fitbit. Or your phone might have a distance tracker automatically installed under the Health app.
Your funds will go directly to the National Deaf Children’s Society, where your cash will help smash down barriers for deaf children. After the funds are on your page, they will be sent automatically to the charity, so you can concentrate on completing your 50k!
We need your postal address so we can send you a tour t-shirt and fundraising pack in the post. We’ll also send you a few email updates on things like how the challenge is going and our fundraising tips. You can opt out of email communications at any time.
On your Facebook fundraising page, go to ‘manage your page’ and ‘edit’. You’ll be able to change the date here.
Our challenge starts on 1 May and we’d like you to hold off until then if possible so you can join in with our Facebook community. If 50k is too far in a month, you can run it into June.
You can start fundraising as early as you like. You can also sign up and start the challenge at any point in May; we don’t want you to miss out!
The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. Do as much as you can. You can always return to your walking or running at a later date. Don’t push yourself if your body is telling you it needs to rest. We want you to feel healthy and happy by the end of May!
