Access Reading Tests (ART)

The Access Reading Test (ART) is a standardised assessment for students aged between 7 and 20. It can be used as a screening test to baseline students transitioning from primary to secondary education.

Age range

7- 20 years

Who can use it?

Teachers

How is it used?

The ART can be used to assess progress in reading at regular intervals using two sets of parallel forms, designed for repeat testing. ART is available in paper and digital formats, and comes with free online reporting for both, allowing users to analyse results in an easy and digestible format.

What can it tell us?

The ART can identify specific areas that may be limiting a student's overall success and plan relevant and targeted intervention strategies to boost or stretch skills. It produces reliable data to help build a picture of a student's normal way of working and to provide as evidence for reasonable adjustments in examination. Practitioners can analyse performance and quickly spot gaps in learning via free reporting tool My Access and Reporting Kit (MARK).

Pros

  • Is well standardised.
  • Can function for individual assessment and as a group screening instrument.
  • Parallel forms.
  • Can be administered with paper and pencil or digitally using online scoring and reporting available via free reporting tool My Access and Reporting Kit (MARK).

Cons

  • Can be expensive for a small number of children.
  • Is often used as a screening tool by mainstream schools.

Is there a cost?

Yes.
