Daisy and the Coolest Quest... Ever!

Published Date: 07 Apr 2020

Child's drawing of storyDaisy's drawing of her story.

It was nearing dusk in the Kingdom of Cool Stuff. The moonlight was glinting off a two-bladed sword gripped in the hands of a young Deaf girl, Daisy. It was past eight o'clock but Daisy didn't care – she had just got 12 bullseyes in a row! A tricky thing to achieve as the target kept jumping out of the way. Daisy suspected this was the doing of some dark magic. Could it be that evil had risen again?

But no time to think about that now, Daisy had just checked her watch and realised: "Arrgh I was supposed to be home three hours ago!!" She started a brisk walk home, Simba and Slinky followed. Slinky is a cat that likes to eat grass. Simba is a cat that likes climbing stuff and not coming back down... Daisy arrived home late, got told off for the three billionth time and went upstairs to bed.

She woke to the sound of screaming and shouting. Daisy grabbed her hunting bow and quiver. She sheathed her sword and ran outside. The whole place was in chaos! People were running and screaming, soldiers shouting orders. Blood stained the ground – the Kingdom of Cool Stuff had become a battleground! Daisy looked around for the source of the attack. She saw skeleton warriors with spears, and one heading straight towards her! She shouldered her bow, and drew her sword. Daisy poked the skeleton through the ribs with her sword and twisted it round. The skeleton was thrown off its feet and landed in a pile of bones. Daisy looked around for any more skeletons but it seemed like the attack had finally stopped.

Everybody was tired, and many were wounded. There was a meeting to discuss what had just happened. The Lord Ethoryn was not pleased. “What is the meaning of this?” he boomed. Silence. "You DON'T KNOW?" Ethoryn boomed. "Wait!" Daisy stood up. "I know of some strange stuff that happened to me yesterday." "You do?" Ethoryn asked? So Daisy told him about the target moving out of the way. "Mmm, it is as I thought," pondered Ethoryn. "Ancient evil has awoken. Daisy you are destined to go on a quest. In the days of old, these bad guys wanted to rule the world but the Kingdom of Cool Stuff defeated them. Now they seek revenge. Daisy, stop Kondarlyn and return peace to the kingdom. Our lives depend on you."

So that is how Daisy found herself in the middle of the forest. Her sword had been enchanted so that when she balanced the hilt of her sword on her palm, the blade would fall in the direction that she needed to go. She had Simba and Slinky for company. They were in the Forest of Darkness, which lived up to its name, darkness surrounded them. All of a sudden, she heard a rustle behind a bush. She swivelled round, arrow notched at her bow! A blood-curdling howl echoed through the forest and a pack of mutant wolves emerged. They had huge spines on their backs and poisonous fangs. Simba and Slinky ran up ahead. Daisy fired arrow after arrow at the wolves but they kept on coming. And then, she saw it. A cliff up ahead. "Maybe... Just maybe..." She thought. Daisy headed towards the edge, and... JUMPED!

Daisy scrabbled for a hold. She landed on a ledge jutting out of the rock. Many of the wolves fell in an attempt to catch her. Daisy looked around and saw a passage way in to the cliff. She ventured in. It was dark and smelly. Suddenly someone grabbed her. "Get off you idiot," said Daisy. But then more of them appeared. "Take her to the Lord Kondarlyn," said one of the guards. "Grrr," grumbled Daisy as they threw her into a chamber. The tall dark figure of Kondarlyn rose from a throne and commanded: "Take her to the hypnotising room. And take away those white things on her ears – they could be communication devices."

***

Daisy's cochlear implants had been removed. Daisy was unphased by this, she knew sign language! In the chamber there was some low droning hypnotic music – which of course Daisy could not hear! Daisy was chilling out in the chamber, getting stuck into her enormous copy of The Lord of The Rings and quietly wondering what the point of all this being locked up was anyway. Guards entered the chamber interrupting her reading and Daisy shouted: "What the heck do you think you're doing?! I'm just at the bit where Gollum attacks Frodo and Sam!" The guards could clearly see she was not hypnotised and retreated.

Looking in her backpack, Daisy discovered a horn (you know, the kind you blow) and... blew it. Nothing happened. But through a crack in the dungeon wall, she could see the horn had called allies now coming to her aid!

Simba found Daisy. "Where have you been?!" Daisy asked him in sign language. "Trying to find you!" Simba answered in cat language. "Can you get the keys?" Daisy signed. "Sure," Simba miaowed. Daisy unlocked the door, escaped, and saw soldiers from the neighbouring kingdom battling Kondarln's armies. Daisy, Simba and Slinky didn't wait a moment to join the fight. Kondarlyn stepped in front of Daisy and drew his sword. Daisy drew hers. Their swords met with a clang. It was a fearsome battle but Daisy disarmed him and held her sword high.

"Surrender or die," she spoke and signed. He shook his head. "Very well," she said. She plunged her sword into his heart. Kondarlyn was defeated and the bad guys slunk away never to be seen or heard from again. Daisy became the official Protector of the Kingdom of Cool Stuff for eternity.

THE END.
