Raising a Deaf Child: online courses for parents and carers

Take part in our free, online courses to learn more about ways of raising a happy deaf child

By attending a course of weekly online sessions, you will build skills and confidence to support your child through the challenges they face.

Courses will be led by one of our experienced trainers, who is a parent of a deaf child. You will also receive advice and support from other parents and carers taking part.

Who these courses are for

  • Parents and carers of deaf children aged 0 to 13-years-old.
  • To apply, you'll need to be a member.

Membership is free and it means you'll have access to lots of great benefits. Find out more about membership.

Even if you don’t have access to a laptop, tablet or good internet connection, we encourage you to apply. If you are offered a place, we will contact you about how we can help you to get online.

About the application process

  • To apply, you will need to complete an online application form.
  • You will be notified within 28 days if your application has been successful. Applying does not guarantee you a place.
  • We may close applications sooner than advertised, depending on the number we receive.

Communication support

  • Captions will be available in all sessions.
  • BSL interpreters or community language interpreters will be available on request. Please let us know when applying if you will need support.

Raising a Deaf Child: Behaviour

21 February to 28 March 2022

This course will help you understand the causes of certain behaviours, and how to encourage positive behaviour from your deaf child. You will come away with the skills and confidence to manage your child’s behaviour.

Topics we will cover

  • Causes of challenging behaviour
  • promoting positive behaviour
  • stopping unacceptable behaviour
  • how to talk to your deaf child about feelings.

When and where

This course is made up of six online sessions. Join us on Zoom from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on the following Mondays:

Raising a Deaf Child: Communication

This course will look at ways to improve how you communicate with and support your deaf child, and give you the skills and confidence to do so.

  • Behaviours, feelings and needs of deaf children
  • better communication with your deaf child
  • the importance of play
  • how to help motivate your child to learn
  • top tips for dealing with and preventing bullying.

This will course look at the journey that parents, children and the wider family go on after a child is diagnosed with deafness. The course will build your skills and confidence to support your deaf child.

  • tips on working with the professionals who support your child
  • supporting your child to be resilient.
