Deaf children can do anything other children can do, given the right support from the start. Good support in the early years will help deaf children reach their full potential.

Module Overview

This module has been developed for all mainstream early years practitioners to prepare for and to support deaf children.

Effective language and communication skills lie at the heart of deaf children and young people’s social, emotional and intellectual development. That’s why identifying a suspected hearing loss and knowing what to do is key to children’s social and emotional development and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you’ll be able to:

  • Recognise some signs of hearing loss
  • Confidently sign post families for further support
  • Use strategies which may support a child with a suspected hearing loss
  • Carry out a basic assessment of the listening environment
  • Identify changes you can make to your environment
  • Identify changes you can make to your own professional practice

How long will this course take?

This course should take around 1 hour to complete, although you are welcome to work through it at your own pace. You will have 30 days to complete the course before it expires.
