My 17 year old grandson has come to live with us for a year, whilst he studies at college.
He has anxiety/trust issues and finds it hard to make friends? He spends a lot of time at home with us. During Covid19 lock downs it is difficult to find clubs or activities for my grandson.
Can anyone help, I'm new to this 😊

Hi,

Thank you for starting this thread. I’m sorry no one has commented yet. Your Community is still very new and we’re still building up our membership.

We are sorry to read that your grandson is struggling with anxiety and he finds it hard to make new friends. This is not uncommon for deaf children and young people.

We have information on our website about emotional health and wellbeing. This includes information about building self-esteem. We also have information on understanding emotions and feelings.

Sadly, during Covid19 it is harder to find clubs and activities that your grandson could take part in. But it is not impossible. We run online events for deaf children and young people. You can find more information on our events page.

We also have links with local Deaf Children’s Societies around the UK. These groups are independent from us but we work closely with them.

Local Groups are typically run by parents and carers of deaf children. They give emotional and social support to families with deaf children, and give deaf children the chance to meet outside of school. You can check with the local group in your area if they have any suitable events for your grandson. You can find your local group here.

Your grandson might also like to engage with The Buzz. This is our website for children and young people aged 8-18. And he can find videos for deaf teenagers on our YouTube channel

We hope this information is useful and more parents will respond to your post on here.

If you’re still looking for support you may want to contact our Helpline team who can provide information and advice.

Take care,

Denise

Hello I to have a grandaughter who nearly 13 who lives with us and she is proudly deaf but has had a Cocula implant and we have taught her to talk as she has only been living with us for 6 years and doesn't have friends outside of school

its very hard to find any clubs but it depends on where you live and you can join a deaf club that is near your area but most things are on line and I know how you feel it's a very lonely time for deaf children specially if there is no other children around them we are based in Sutton cheam area
