Northern Ireland Sign Language Bill

We want to strengthen deaf children’s access to communication and language by influencing the Sign Language Bill.

Two boys sit on either side of a woman. All are using sign language.

In March 2025, we conducted a vital survey to capture the voices of parents and young people in response to the Northern Ireland Sign Language Bill. This report shares the thoughts, hopes, and concerns of participating families across Northern Ireland, highlighting the everyday importance of British and Irish Sign Language for deaf children’s communication, inclusion and identity.

With the bill now under consideration by the Assembly’s Committee for Communities, we will use this evidence to inform the legislative process and strengthen the case for sign language to be recognised, supported, and made more accessible throughout public life.

Explore the report to understand what this law could mean for the deaf community, and why change is needed now.
