Pre-school family support groups for deaf children research (2025)

This research highlights the benefits of pre-school family groups for families with deaf babies and children, as part of the wider package of support to families in the early years.

The research was carried out by Helen Nelson, a leading expert in early intervention. It looked at the support typically provided to families in 8 pre-school groups across the UK.

Each group was run by Teachers of the Deaf from the local authority specialist education service for deaf children.

Families and professionals reported a range of benefits to families from attending these groups, such as families connecting and supporting each other.

Several challenges were also highlighted, including around families being able to attend groups and access information.

Alongside the report, a separate document setting out good practice recommendations has also been produced.

The research and recommendations will be especially relevant to those involved in planning and delivering early support to families with deaf children.
