Deaf Awareness for Early Years Practitioners – CPD accredited
Are you new to working with children who are deaf or have hearing loss? This training is the perfect place to start learning about deaf awareness.
This workshop is suitable for anyone working in an early years setting, such as nurseries, creches, childminder settings and pre-school and reception classes.
You'll learn practical communication tips and some basic British Sign Language (BSL) signs.

What you'll learn
This training covers:
- understanding childhood deafness and some of its causes
- technology that can be used to support deaf children
- using gestures and basic BSL signs with deaf children
- using books and rhymes with deaf children
CPD accreditation
1.75 CPD hours/points. Certified by CPD UK.
You'll receive a certificate when you complete the training.
Accessibility
Communication support, including captions and BSL interpreting, is available on request when booking.
Preparation
Before the workshop we'll ask you to complete:
- a short survey to tell us a little about how confident you feel working with deaf children.
- an e-learning module that will take about 1 hour to complete. You're welcome to work through this at your own pace, and you can revisit it anytime.
The survey and the e-learning module will be available on our online training hub before the workshop. You can create an account on our training hub when you book your place.

Meet the trainer
Sian Wilson
Sian has worked at the National Deaf Children’s Society since 2011 supporting families of deaf children and professionals who work with deaf children.
Sian has over 30 years’ experience of supporting children and their families, including 6 years in a specialist unit for deaf children in a primary school and 11 years working in a deprived area in Wales as part of Sure Start.
Sian initially qualified as an NNEB and also has a degree in Childhood Studies. She has qualified with Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP) stage 2.
Cancel or change your booking
If you need to cancel your place, please email us at training@ndcs.org.uk.
If you cancel:
- 7 working days or less before the planned date, you'll be charged 100% of the total cost
- 8 to 14 working days before the planned date, you'll be charged 50% of the total cost
- 15 working days before the planned date, you won't be charged
You can also give your place to a colleague or friend, but please let us know at least 3 days before the workshop.
