Guidance on tax

Inheritance tax

We are a registered charity, and most bequests are exempt from inheritance tax. Exempt gifts should therefore be deducted from the estate before inheritance tax is calculated.

If more than 10% of the value of the estate has been left to charity, inheritance tax may be payable at a reduced rate.

We always recommend seeking professional advice as the rules around inheritance tax can change and everyone’s circumstances are different.

Income tax

We are able to claim back income tax paid during the administration process in relation to any gifts left to us.

To assist with this, please send us a completed R185 (Estate Income) (GOV.UK website)

Information we need from you

Guidelines set down by the Charity Commission mean we require certain information from you.

Please provide us with the following details:

  • the full name and title of the person who has left a gift
  • their last address
  • the date of their death
  • the will executor’s name and contact details
  • a copy of the will
  • schedule of assets and liabilities
  • estate accounts once the estate has been finalised
  • any information about the reason for the legacy

Please notify us of any gift at the earliest opportunity as this allows us to prevent further communication being sent to the deceased, avoiding unnecessary distress to the family.
