Welsh Government reviews support plans
The Welsh Government is reviewing the way in which children's support needs are assessed. NDCS Cymru wants to make sure that any changes work for deaf children and young people, but is concerned by the current proposals.
At the moment, many deaf children receive a Statement or an Individual Education Plan to outline the support that they need at school. The Welsh Government wants to change this process so that all children with any support needs will have a new plan instead, called an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
NDCS Cymru is calling on the Welsh Government to ensure that the proposed new system will work for deaf children, but has concerns about some of the proposals we have seen.
The Welsh Government will soon be holding a public consultation. This will be an important opportunity to have your say before any changes are made... watch this space for more details!
Take Action!
NDCS Cymru is running two focus groups for parents/carers of deaf children and young people to find out about the proposed changes and let us know what they think.
We are running two events:
- 20 June 2012, Wrexham, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
- 21 June 2012, Cardiff, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Refreshments will be provided at both events.
To book onto one of these events, please email
Debbie.Thomas@ndcs.org.uk, or call 029 20373474.

Pilots
The Welsh Government has asked eight local authorities to test out the new IDP. Some families in these areas may be asked to take part in the trial, but should be aware that they remain entitled to the same support as families elsewhere in Wales and can still request a Statement if they wish.
The eight local authorities that are trialing the new IDP are:
• Bridgend
• Cardiff
• Caerphilly
• Carmarthenshire
• Flintshire
• Newport
• Pembrokeshire
• Torfaen
